It can be used in individual and group format. It is predominantly a Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy Program. It is currently involved in a research program.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) uses two evidence-based techniques: (a) Cognitive Therapy: examining “our thinking styles”; and (b)Behaviour Therapy: addressing our actions and behaviour. Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (ERP) is a form of CBT which helps people to confront their fears while exploring alternative ways to respond to the anxious thoughts or doubts. Research has shown that CBT is a highly successful treatment for people with anxiety. It is the treatment of choice for tackling anxiety by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and specialist centres.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, known as ‘ACT’ (pronounced as the word ‘act’) is a mindfulness based behavioural therapy. The goal of ACT is to create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. It is only through mindful action that we can create a meaningful life. ACT teaches mindfulness skills as an effective way to handle these private experiences. ACT differs from traditional cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in that rather than trying to teach people to better control their thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories and other private events, ACT teaches them to “just notice”, accept, and embrace their private events, especially previously unwanted ones.
DIRT [Danger Ideation Reduction Therapy] for Obsessive Compulsive Washers
DIRT for washers is a unique evidence-based program to treat people suffering from obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) specifically, OCD washers whose behaviour is characterised by expectancies of danger. Unlike many traditional OCD treatments, DIRT is based on the rationale that the therapist should provide as much factual information as possible to decrease the expectancy of illness or disease and thus reduce the high dropout rate seen in conventional OCD exposure and response prevention programs. The program consists of six discrete treatment components aimed at reducing the number of intrusive thoughts experienced and concurrently allowing the client to successfully change the remaining thoughts and beliefs related to illness and contamination. The components may be used selectively or concurrently, as and how a therapist decides is appropriate for individual clients. The treatment components are attentional focusing, cognitive restructuring, corrective information, microbiological experiments, filmed interviews and the probability of catastrophe task. Included in the program is a DVD of 8 filmed interviews about risk assessment.
DIRT has been shown to be a highly successful treatment, able to shift even the most intractable of cases. Randomised control studies have established that DIRT represents a viable alternative to the standard behavioural approach.

DIRT for Checkers is a unique new evidence-based treatment program designed to specifically reduce expectancies of danger or threat in those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) with predominant checking concerns. Unlike many traditional OCD treatments, DIRT is based on the rationale that the therapist should provide as much factual information as possible to decrease the expectancy that harmful events such as the fear of fire, damage, theft, harm to others and other physical losses will follow any failure to check and thus reduce the high dropout rate seen in conventional OCD exposure and response prevention programs. DIRT consists of six discrete treatment components aimed at reducing the number of intrusive thoughts experienced and concurrently allowing the client to successfully change the remaining thoughts and beliefs. The treatment includes attentional focusing, cognitive restructuring, double-checking experiments, corrective information, filmed interviews, probability of catastrophe task.

Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is a form of psychotherapy developed by Adrian Wells. In psychological disorders such as anxiety, thinking becomes difficult to control and is dominated by extended processing. This leads to an increase in emotional suffering which worsens as the person’s thinking and attention becomes fixed on “false danger”. MCT helps patients develop new ways of controlling their attention, new ways of relating to negative thoughts and beliefs, and modify metacognitive beliefs that give rise to unhelpful thinking patterns. This approach has been developed into specific ways of understanding and treating mental disorders such as generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, depression, and health-anxiety.
